Doug's Note: Good control of charcoal. You've captured a realistic quality in this drawing. It looks like you understand the importance of lighting when you draw lifelike portraits.

It's also nice to see that the texture of her clothing is not overlooked ... since it provides such a supportive role to her face. The attention to detail can be seen in her shoulder, where a subtle highlight differentiates your grandmother's dress from the black background.

How did you get such a nice even background?
